Representatives from the Kaweah Subbasin, including the East Kaweah GSA, recently met with the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) to discuss the Subbasin’s Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs) and ongoing efforts to address land subsidence. The meeting marked the first formal coordination with DWR since the Kaweah Subbasin transitioned out of probation with the State Water Resources Control Board and returned to DWR’s oversight.

The discussion focused on the alignment between the Subbasin’s GSPs with DWR’s recently released Land Subsidence Best Management Practices and established a collaborative path forward as DWR reviews conducts its ongoing plan review. The meeting reflects a positive, proactive relationship with DWR and is expected to be the first of many conversations as the Subbasin continues implementing its plans to achieve sustainability.

The Kaweah Subbasin’s collaborative approach to subsidence management is also receiving broader recognition. A recent Groundwater Resources Association HydroVisions article co-authored by Kait Palys, Water Resources Scientist with INTERA and East Kaweah GSA consultant, highlighted the Kaweah Subbasin’s coordinated efforts to address subsidence. By highlighting the suite of strategies including groundwater allocations, managed aquifer recharge, and regional planning among East Kaweah, Greater Kaweah, and Mid-Kaweah GSAs, the feature recognizes the Subbasin as an example of how agencies are putting subsidence management into practice.
