The East Kaweah GSA submitted an application for the most recent Department of Water Resources (DWR) Sustainable Groundwater Management (SGM) Grant Program solicitation, continuing its momentum on grant funding for local groundwater projects.

This program funds Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) across California to promote healthy and sustainable groundwater basins and other projects that provide multiple benefits, while also improving groundwater supply and quality.

Landowners benefit directly from grant funding as it goes toward projects that position the region to capture surface water and recharge the aquifer.

The East Kaweah GSA often shares in the responsibility of grant applications and administration with its Kaweah Subbasin partners, the Mid-Kaweah and Greater Kaweah GSAs, to fulfill projects and meet sustainability goals for the entire region by 2040.

If awarded, this grant funding would add to the Subbasin’s existing portfolio of grants including the Prop 68 Wildlife Conservation Board – Regional Conservation Investment Strategies grant, Basin Planning grant, Multibenefit Land Repurposing Program grant and the Regional Conservation Investment Strategies grant.

Local GSAs like the East Kaweah are financially responsible for meeting regulations under SGMA, but grant funding helps carry out sustainability projects with reduced burden on local dollars.
